Today at University we had Toby Smith as our guest speaker. So far this year he has been one of the most influential and interesting photographers to come to the Uni for me. It was great to hear his stories on how he goes about his projects, what he did before he became a photographer and how networking is a very key aspect in the world of documentary and reportage photography, along with a lot of research and knowing what you want and how to get it.
These are two of his images from his 2009 project on the Madagascan illegal logging industry. This is just two of many images that show this problem, but at the same time the series also brings up the point that the country is in a financial crises, the government are in on this illegal act and that this is yet another story that would not of been made aware to the public, unless someone went out of their way to get a great story.
Check out his website/blog for more details on this project and other projects that Toby has and is currently working on.
