Favourite Photographers - Jerry Ueslmann

Jerry Ueslmann is one of my favourite black and white photographers at the moment. I have never had the chance to see Jerry Uelsmann's work hanging on a gallery wall as I believe it would be amazing to look at. Ueslmann takes loads of photographs of many different objects, people and landscapes. He then hits the darkroom which has several enlargers and he goes to work creating visually stunning and mind blowing images. These pictures could be of floating islands over a river or a woman emerging from a lake. They all look as if they had been created on Photoshop and other photo editing software’s but they were all created in the dark room using stencils and a lot of patience.

I have one of his books "Other Realities" which has copies of some of his work and when flicking though the pages you just get taken to another world and just want to wonder how he created such visually stunning images.

Again like all the photographers, artists and all other people I talk about if you can get their books or go to their exhibitions I would straight way, especially Jerry Ueslmann as his work is just beautiful and takes you away from the world around you.

Favourite Photographers - Tom Hunter

This photographer is a gent from Peckham in London who did a series based on front page titles of his local newspaper. As they always seemed to show horror, death and violence of the local area unlike national papers.

What Hunter has done in this series is take great pieces of art from the 18th and 19th century and recreated them based on the headlines of his local papers, by recreating these master peices Tom Hunter has become a well known art photographer.

If you ever get chance to see his work, go, they are out standing and impacting. They make you think of what the world around us gets up too and the recreations are fantastic.

Favourite Photographers - Chris Coekin

I managed to see Chris Coekin's latest work The Hitcher a few years back, at the Photographer Gallery and found his work very interesting. For the series he did three types of photography styles; snap shots of him waiting for people to pull over and help him out; still life images of items found on the side of the road and lastly portraits of the people that were nice enough to give Coekin a lift to where ever the driver could take him. I personally liked the portraits a lot more than the rest of the exhibition work; this is not saying the other styles are not interesting at all. Seeing what people have thrown on the road and the road kill is a great still life documentation of what’s on the roads of Britain but I have always been interested in portrait and documentary work a lot more.
What I really like is how all the portraits show the driver with their vehicle. This is what helps the viewer understand more about the person who was so helpful and understanding to this hitcher. If they were just standing in a field or by a building you would not get a full understanding of who they are. If they were in a field they could be anyone but with their motor next to them you learn a lot more about them.

If you ever get chance to go and see Chris Coekins work in a gallery I advise you to go and enjoy how Chris creates a good narrative of his journey across Britain.

Favourite Photographers - Steve McCurry

One of my favourite photographers is photojournalist and member of Magnum Photos, Steve McCurry. His work focuses on South and Southeast Asia and some of his work is known internationally for its beautiful and stunning colours and insite in to cultures of the said areas.

His portrait work is what he is most known for, from wide-eyed children to weather worn elderly gentlemen. With the subjects eyes looking at you, you feel a connection with this person, the bright vibrant colours help the photograph stick out and capture the viewers attention.

Basically this guy is great so go and look him up and buy his book Looking East and see the true beauty of his work up close and personal, it will blow you away.
